Werder Bremen played to a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on the 27th game day. Tranquillo Barnetta (11’ minute) and Claudio Pizarro (33’) scored the goals in front of 42,900 spectators in Düsseldorf, Leverkusen’s home while renovations are on-going at their home stadium.

Both teams offered an entertaining game in the first half. Bremen controlled the run of play early on but Leverkusen scored the first goal. Naldo cleared a pass by Michal Kadlec but Toni Kroos played off to Barnetta and the Swiss international blasted the ball home from 20 yards into the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead.

Despite missing Diego and having played a tough UEFA Cup match on Thursday, Werder fought back and equalised in the 33rd minute. Once again it was Pizarro who brought the Bremen fans to their feet, heading home from eight yards Aaron Hunt’s cross from the right side to make it 1-1 – also the score-line at half-time.

The spectators saw an open game with chances for both sides after the break. Per Mertesacker was stopped from near distance by Rene Adler in the 69th minute and Clemens Fritz struck the post in the 75th minute. Just seconds later, Leverkusen’s Kroos had his team’s best chance but could not beat Tim Wiese, leaving both teams a deserved 1-1 draw.
