In a battle of two strong teams, Diego made the difference on Thursday night. The playmaker guided his team to a victory with two goals, causing more than just the spectators to jump from their seats. Werder management also praised Diego. "The first goal was a beauty. The second was something special, it was very nice," said head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Manager Klaus Allofs was also excited. "Diego's second goal was simply brilliant. To play the ball into the upper corner in that situation is something few can do," said Allofs. "His two goals were just the crowning of his performance. He ran a lot and really pushed the team," said Diego's compatriot and teammate Naldo.
Diego was pleased with so much recognition but passed the praise onto his team-mates. "Sure I'm happy about a good game and both goals, but I'm not the only one who helped get this win. Every one of us played our part, and everyone can be happy," said the Brazilian playmaker.
Schaaf was happy to see Diego compliment his team-mates, emphasising that the Brazilian wasn't the only one on the pitch. "Diego may do some special things, which he showed again today. But if everything goes normally, Diego needs at least 10 other players on the pitch to support him. And without them, he couldn't do the things he does," said the Werder coach.
Diego would not have been half as dangerous on Thursday without Mesut Özil. The young German set up the Brazilian for both goals. "That's a very good axis that we have," said Klaus Allofs. And Torsten Frings added: "Diego was fed superbly twice and had a lot of choices but he had to take advantage of them. Scoring goals is also part of his job."
