Claudio Pizarro was active, willing and motivated. But 15 minutes before the end of the 4-1 victory against Hannover on Sunday, the Peruvian did not think he would be named "Citibank Man of the Match". Pizarro had scored the game's first goal, but the tally was more luck than skill. And after the equaliser he missed two excellent chances to give Werder back the lead.
But he and his team-mates did not let up and in the end they were rewarded for their efforts. "Just like the team, he wasn't as strong as the result and his three goals indicated. He also has been lacking recently the last bit of momentum and perseverance. But he and the rest of the team still were able to turn the corner," said manager Klaus Allofs.
And Pizarro was deserving of the praise afterwards. "What can you say after three goals? He really did a good job," said keeper Tim Wiese. Diego also honoured his team-mate's fine showing. "With this hat-trick he now has 15 goals. That's an excellent result and very important for the team. He showed once again how experienced he is and how well he can concentrate on the pitch despite all the headlines revolving around him," said the Bremen playmaker.
The South American striker of course was asked after the game about the proceedings back in his homeland. And the 30-year-old offered the same answer he has for days. "I am being asked the same question all the time. And I can only say I come up with these kinds of showings because I have absolutely no problem, I have no bad conscious," said Pizarro. Hopefully he is the same on Thursday against Udinese...
