No motivation in the Bundesliga? Resting for the cup competitions? No signs of that! Werder Bremen showed with a 4-1 victory over Hannover that such statements are not true. The hard-earned win was the right sign for head coach Thomas Schaaf. "I am happy that the team regained their strength after the 1-1 equaliser and turned around the game. They also didn't give up after the 2-1 lead and just kept going. And their desire to win was clearly evident," said the coach.
Still, the coach would have liked to have seen his team's authority earlier in the game. "Altogether we made things difficult for ourselves. Even after the 1-0 lead we were unable to steady the game. We even missed a chance to go ahead 2-0 when we missed the penalty. And because we couldn't increase our lead we were never able to calm down the game. We can be more satisfied with the second half than the first half."
Manager Klaus Allofs agreed with Schaaf's assessment. "With what's coming up for us, the best thing is to win, score goals and find a rhythm. That gives you confidence. And we accomplished that," said Allofs. But the manager knows the result is a bit misleading. "Once again, we allowed an aggravating goal, which should not have been scored. We again made life difficult for ourselves, meaning we needed to work harder than we should have."
The stutter start was also a topic for the players. Torsten Frings never really doubted his team would not bag the three points. But he knew the points would not be just handed to them on Sunday night. "It was not easy for us today because Hannover stood really compact and at first we didn't use our chances. We had to talk about some things at half-time to make things a bit easier. And it worked out in the end," said Frings.
