Werder Bremen beat Hannover 4-1 on the 26th game day. In front of 42,100 spectators in Weser-Stadion, Claudio Pizarro scored a hat-trick (41’,80’,84’) and Diego (77’) struck for Werder and Jacek Krzynowek (70’) scored for the guests.
Like in so many home matches, Werder started the North Derby with a strong push forward and dictated the run of play early despite a compact defence by Hannover. The guests nearly used their tactic of the counter attack to grab the lead after 17 minutes. Jan Rosenthal fed Jiri Stajner, but Bremen keeper Tim Wiese fended away Stajner’s attempt.
The Green-Whites were the most dangerous team after this chance. Naldo (29th) watched Hannover keeper Robert Enke stop his header and then the German international keeper blocked attempts by Diego (33rd) and Mesut Özil (35th). And Bremen finally pulled through with Claudio Pizarro’s first goal in the 41st. The Peruvian attempted a shot from 18 yards but the ball deflected off former Bremen player Christian Schulz over Enke for the 1-0 Werder lead at the break.
After the break, the spectators saw what they were waiting for - goals! First off, Diego’s penalty after 61 minutes was stopped by Hannover keeper Robert Enke. Then Krzynowek was first to score, evening the game in the 70th with a shot from 14 yards into the right corner. But then the grande Werder Show started. Diego grabbed his goal just minutes later after collecting Alexandros Tziolis’s high header and beating Enke with his right foot.
Then the floodgates opened. Per Mertesacker headed back a corner from the left side to Pizarro, who made it 3-1 with a header in the 80th minute. Four minutes later, Pizarro struck again after a perfect pass from Mesut Özil, blasting into the far left corner.
