Bremen is expecting a very special atmosphere on Sunday. The city will host the 44th edition of the Bundesliga derby between Werder Bremen and Hannover. The anticipation is high for both sides and the game has been sold out for days. Both the Bremen and Hannover fan blocks will be fully packed.
Footballers from both clubs are campaigning that things in the city and stadium remain peaceful despite a large rush of football fans. On Thursday, two players who swapped teams - Hannover's former Werder player Christian Schulz and Bremen's former Hannover player Per Mertesacker - asked fans to be fair.
"Werder against Hannover! Those were always very special games. For you fans and us players on both teams," "Schulle" said on Wednesday. "As a player, I have gotten to know both sides. So I am convinced that there will be a fair and fascinating football played in Weser-Stadion and connecting all of us. I am really looking forward to this northern German derby and an exciting 90 minutes for all Werder and Hannover fans."
Per Mertesacker agreed with his former team-mate. "Just like 'Schulle', I too have a good relationship with both sides because I played in front of both teams. Of course I am also very excited about the upcoming derby against Hannover on Sunday. Whoever has seen the last few games knows what kind of football festival awaits the players and spectators," Mertesacker said. "These two teams have always gone at it on the pitch. And I am really looking forward to more of that on Sunday, though it must also be fair from both sides."
