The German national team took a further step towards reaching the 2010 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wales. With Cardiff's Millennium Stadium less than half-filled, the Germans worked hard to gain the three points and remain undefeated and atop the qualifying Group 4 after six of 10 game days.
Germany's and Werder's defence boss Per Mertesacker played an excellent game and as usual was strong in his tackling. Werder keeper Tim Wiese meanwhile was the first backup to top keeper Robert Enke just like in the game against Liechtenstein. Wiese's next chance to possibly play for Germany would be during the national team's Asia trip in late May/early June. Joachim Löw's team will be facing China on 29 May and the United Arab Emirates on 2 June. The next World Cup qualifier is 12 August when Germany takes on former German national team coach Berti Vogts' Azerbaijan.
