Werder Bremen’s internationals had a successful Saturday in World Cup qualifying action. Petri Pasanen earned his 50th cap for the Finnish national team in an important 2-0 road victory against Wales. Among the other Werder players to collect a victory was Daniel Jensen. The Dane was replaced in the 63rd minute by former Bremen player Leon Andreasen as Denmark beat Malta 3-0 to take over the lead in the qualifying Group 1.
The national teams of Hugo Almeida and Markus Rosenberg played to a 0-0 draw in Portugal. While “Rosi“ missed the game injured for Sweden, Almeida was brought on after 66 minutes for Zenit St. Petersburg’s Danny. But the Bremen striker was unable to help the Portuguese take advantage of their superiority.
In Group 2, Otto Rehhagel’s Greeks could not hold a 1-0 lead against Israel in playing to a 1-1 draw in Tel Aviv. But Alexandros Tziolis, who was subbed out with two minutes to play, did help Greece to a valuable point on the road. Sebastian Prödl and the Austrian national team did not play on Saturday but will take on Romania in Group 7 on Wednesday.
