The German national team collected a comfortable 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein in the fifth game of their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. In front of a sold-out crowd in Leipzig’s Zentralstadion, German national team coach Joachim Löw had Bremen’s Per Mertesacker as an interior defender while Werder keeper Tim Wiese was kept on the bench despite a strong showing this season.
Michael Ballack, Marcell Jansen, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski scored goals for the German team in the victory over the football minnows. Germany improved to 13 points from five matches and have a four-point lead over Russia, who have a game in hand. Finland are third with seven points from four games. Wales are fourth with six points in five games. Following at the bottom of the standings are Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein with one point each.
