Werder Bremen is not the only team dealing with the after pains of the UEFA Cup. Their quarter-final opponent Udinese Calcio also is suffering from the extra burdens of the European competition, losing deservedly 2-0 against the fourth placed team in the Italian Serie A CFC Genua.
Udinese head coach Pasquale Marino rested his top two strikers Antonio di Natale (12 league goals) and Fabio Quagliarella (9 league goals) to start the game. In addition, goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was injured after just six minutes and had to be replaced by Jan Koprivec. who had to watch as Giuseppe Sculli and Diego Milito both scored for Genua. To make matters worse, Udinese's Alexis Sanchez was shown the red card.
Werder's UEFA Cup opponents are also in no-man's land in the standings in 13th place, nine points behind the international ranks and 12 points up on the relegation zone. The Serie A season looks more or less done for, leaving only the UEFA Cup.
