In the sixth minute, he drilled a header into the net and was the happiest of the 18 thrilled Werder players in Saint-Etienne. Defender Sebastian Prödl would have gladly hugged the whole world and had at least a few teammates to grab. It was Prödl's first goal in Werder dress as well as another clear sign that he is well on his way to becoming a crucial part of the team. "The first goal and then such an important one - this is double satisfaction," said Prödl about his goal.
After the game, the young Austrian stood before media representatives, analysing the game with a mix of confidence, restraint and a willingness to learn that head coach Thomas Schaaf values. "The goal doesn't belong just to me. We all moved really well into the area. Per Mertesacker opened up some space for me and Torsten Frings struck a superb corner. And then there was the luck that I wasn't really covered that well," said Prödl.
The interior defender was hardly unhappy about having to help out on the outside of the backline in France. Still, he would like to work and grab a spot in the centre of the defence. "I am happy that I got a chance again. I also don't have any problem with the position and have shown that I can play good games there. But I hope my performances will get me a spot in the middle. I don't really want to make too good of friends with the exterior position."
But the Austrian is not worried that he has picked a tough road to the starting line-up. "I know that 'Merte' (Mertesacker) and Naldo have loads of experience, and I can still learn a lot from them. But I have already shown that I can do it. Besides, the coach has told me I could continue on this way." Apparently with success ...
