Werder Bremen came up with a surprisingly convincing 4-0 victory at home over Stuttgart in the 24th game day. In front of 40,000 spectators at Weser Stadion, the first half had few highlights though one of them was a free kick goal by Diego in the 34th minute. Werder dominated the second half and secured their first Bundesliga victory of 2009 with a goal by Claudio Pizarro in the 53th and two scores from Markus Rosenberg (59th and 74th).
Coming into the game winless in the last six games and with major personnel problems, Bremen struggled to find their rhythm early. But with Stuttgart also failing to create many chances, the first half-hour was without any real highlights. But playmaker Diego supplied the home fans with a reason to celebrate after 34 minutes by circling a free kick from 25 yards off the lower half of the crossbar and in for a 1-0 lead at the break.
Werder became stronger in the second half and the Green-Whites’ fans saw the next beautiful goal in the 53rd minute. Diego heeled a through ball to Pizarro, who blasted into the upper right corner from well over 20 yards. Six minutes later Rosenberg converted a quick attack to make it 3-0. And the Swedish international striker made it 4-0 by beating Jens Lehmann with 16 minutes to play. The Werder fans revelled in the victory, though Thomas Schaaf’s men remained in 10th place in the league.
