Werder Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf will have to make due without his two starting interior defenders for his team's game against Stuttgart. With Naldo already suspended after a red card, Per Mertesacker will remain a no-go after being unable to take part in Saturday afternoon's final practice session.

One candidate to take over the central defensive role would be Frank Baumann, who has been forced to help out in the back with various partners over the past few weeks. But the captain did not want to push the issue. "We have to see first what the coach has planned. Maybe I won't be playing in the back at all. I don't really mind in what role I play. The main thing is that we get our first victory of the second half," said Baumann.

There was positive news coming out of the final practice. Mesut Özil returned to the pitch after a knee capsule injury, getting the green light for a nomination. And while the same could not be said about Daniel Jensen, there was good news about the Danish international. The operation Friday morning to repair his broken nose from the game against Saint Etienne went well.

Werder will face Stuttgart with the following 18 players: Wiese, Vander, Pasanen, Baumann, Prödl, Boenisch, Fritz, Frings, Vranjes, Tziolis, Hunt, Diego, Almeida, Rosenberg, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Özil, Tosic
