It ended up being the desired result, but it really wasn't that satisfying. Werder's 1-0 victory over AS Saint Etienne hardly sent Bremen's players and management into wild celebrations. Manager Klaus Allofs said: "You can be satisfied with a 1-0 victory because it's not a bad result. But for how the game went, it's not enough. We didn't have enough energy and just couldn't get the spark. In attack, we were not consequential enough to give Saint Etienne more problems. And it looked like we were tired mentally."
Allofs cited various possible reasons for such a performance. "You have to give the team credit after a tough week with away games in the cup and the Bundesliga. And you can add that Per Mertesacker missed the game in the last minute and Daniel Jensen was subbed out after just 10 minutes. All of those things could have been factors and influenced the game." And head coach Thomas Schaaf offered: "We made things difficult for ourselves. We should have gotten more in the first half and in the second half we let Saint Etienne into the game with our passiveness."
The biggest critic from the Werder players was goalkeeper Tim Wiese, who could not hold back his aggravation. "This is really sad what we gave our fans. Guys were hardly running in the second half. There were times when we used to go full power against these kinds of teams and score four goals. But we just don't have that in us at the moment I guess. You can sense a difference with us if we are playing against Inter or AC Milan or against a team like Saint-Etienne. If we play there like we did today it's going to be very difficult."
