Jürgen L. Born has officially resigned after having temporarily stepped down on 7 March from his offices as Werder Bremen's chairman of the board of directors and manager of finances and public relations work. Born is currently in South America and offered the following statement Friday afternoon upon new accusations against his person:
"Due to the fact that I, once again, have been the subject of reports revolving around financial transactions of the Peruvian company Image, I have decided to push forward my departure from the Werder Bremen board of directors which was planned for the end of the year. I resign from all my offices with immediate effect. But I can assure everyone that I received no illegal financial benefit at the cost of Werder Bremen and Co. LtD. Getting the evidence for this will take some time, but I want to keep Werder from any unnecessary burdens."
Werder Bremen's supervisory board recognised Born's request at a meeting Friday afternoon at Bremen's Weser Stadion. Willi Lemke, the supervisory board's chairman, said: "That was a logical decision by Jürgen Born. But we will still have an investigation into the matter by an auditing firm. We are obliged - for the good of Werder Bremen - to have the necessary transparency in this issue."
Lemke noted that the re-structuring of duties within the board taken on Monday will remain in place until further notice. Klaus Allofs, the manager of professional football, is taking over the public relations work as well as the chairmanship from Born. Manfred Müller will add the finances area to his current duties as manager of marketing and management. The third member of the board of directors member is Klaus-Dieter Fischer, who is manager of the football performance centre and other sporting branches.
