Three of the four injured Werder players who missed Saturday's 0-0 draw at Hoffenheim in Rhein-Neckar Arena were back on the training grounds Monday afternoon. Goalkeeper Christian Vander, Clemens Fritz and Mesut Özil did not practice with the team but did complete individual training sessions. But the trio were all optimistic about returning to team training soon.
"It looks very good," said Christian Vander, who was out with an adductors muscle tear. "I will test it again Tuesday morning to see if it's okay and then likely get back into full team training in the afternoon." German international defender Clemens Fritz also completed his individual training program without a problem and hopes to train again with the team on Tuesday. Mesut Özil meanwhile was a bit more hesitant about a return.
Torsten Frings, meanwhile, was not even on the pitch at all. "We have to wait and see with Torsten how things develop in the next couple days," said head coach Thomas Schaaf, who also had to do without Claudio Pizarro at training. "Claudio is a bit sick. But I hope it doesn't last too long."
