Jürgen L. Born has temporarily stepped down from all offices at Werder Bremen with immediate effect. The move was announced Saturday night by the chairman of Werder Bremen's supervisory board, Willi Lemke. Born, the chairman of the board of directors and manager of finances and public relations work, stepped down in response to public debate about the details revolving around the transfer of Roberto Silva. "Representatives of the supervisory board welcome and accept this step by Jürgen Born," said Lemke, who added: "We will do everything we can so that there is a quick resolution to the issue."
The Peruvian striker Roberto Silva transferred to Werder Bremen from Sporting Cristal Lima in 2001 for 1.35 million dollars. According to media reports, as part of the Silva transfer there was a payment made to a former account of Jürgen L. Born in Montevideo. "Werder Bremen is known for their solid business politics. And this kind of accusation damages our image. Therefore we will call in an independent and respected auditor to clear up the issue," said Lemke about the further steps in the matter.
Jürgen L. Born explained: "Based on a certificate of authority from the Sporting Cristal club - which we have in original - the entire transfer fee from Werder Bremen was transferred to the brokering agency Image as part of the document. I, myself, did not receive any payment as part of the Roberto Silva transfer. But with these accusations still unresolved, it is only natural for me to forgo my duties with Werder until the final clarification of the matter."
