Werder Bremen have to travel yet again in the German DFB Cup. And as if playing on the road were not difficult enough, German women's international player Ariane Hingst drew Werder to play Hamburg in Germany's historic North Derby in the semi-finals. The Green-Whites will face off against the fellow Bundesliga club on either Tuesday or Wednesday, 21 or 22 April 2009 at the HSH Nordbank Arena with a spot in 30 May 2009 DFB Cup final in Berlin at stake. The other semi-final will see Bayer Leverkusen welcome second division club Mainz.

The Green-Whites were hardly excited about the draw. Head coach Thomas Schaaf had to take a deep breath: "The streak just doesn't end. We have to play on the road yet again. I am really sorry for our fans. It's too bad. From a sports standpoint, we have to see it as a good omen that we have passed other tough challenges on the road in previous rounds. There were not really any more easy opponents left in the draw. All of them qualified for the semi-finals and whoever wants to get to Berlin will have to get by those teams. And that's how we are approaching our game with Hamburg."

Bremen lost the last North Derby in the Bundesliga in the first half of the season 2-1 at Hamburg on 23 November 2008. While this match-up has always been a classic in the Bundesliga (29 victories, 32 draws and 28 losses for Werder), these teams have rarely faced off in the German Cup. The last cup showdown came on 27 October 1993 in Bremen where Werder won 4-2 in the Round of 16. Werder's last cup match in Hamburg dates back almost exactly 20 years ago. Hopefully it's a good omen that Werder won 1-0 on 29 March 1989 with Karl-Heinz Riedle scoring the goal. All told, Bremen have won four of the six matches with Hamburg in cup history.
