Unlike the 5-4 thriller in the first showdown between these two teams this season, both Werder and Hoffenheim played defensively in the first half hour. Neither side could create many chances early but the offensive pressure increased at the end of the first half, with both teams gaining more and more room to operate.
Werder started in the 33rd minute as Sebastian Boenisch crossed to Hugo Almeida but his header from 10 yards hit the upper half of the crossbar. Five minutes from the break, Hoffenheim were close to getting on the scoreboard. Chinedu Obasi crossed into the box to Boubacar Sanogo and the player on loan to Hoffenheim from Werder struck the left upright. And the game was 0-0 at the break.
The offensive football continued after the intermission. In the 52nd minute, Boenisch sent a fine cross from the right side to Claudio Pizarro, whose header went over the goal. The hosts gained in run of play and just one minute later Sanogo hit the left post. Bremen keeper Tim Wiese stopped Demba Ba in the next Hoffenheim attack. And then the Ivory Coast striker Sanogo was again unlucky hitting the left post again just a couple minutes later. Luck for Werder.
Bremen continued to push forward and created a number of chances. In the 64th minute, Diego circled a free kick to Pizarro but his header went just wide of goal. And the Peruvian striker had another chance three minutes later but was stopped by Hoffenheim keeper Daniel Haas from 17 yards. Both teams were determined to grab the lead but could not get the victory.
