Werder defender Clemens Fritz's German DFB Cup night Wednesday against Wolfsburg was over after just 33 minutes. The German international limped off the pitch at Volkswagen Arena and was replaced by Sebastian Boenisch. "The muscle stiffened up," explained the 28-year-old later. "All of a sudden I felt a pull in my left thigh and I knew I couldn't play any more."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf eased concerns at a press conference Thursday morning. "It is nothing bad. Clemens was subbed out in time so that he could be treated for a stiff muscle and not a tear," said Schaaf. "He will be treated over the next couple of days and will miss the game on Saturday in Hoffenheim. But I hope it really only lasts a couple of days, and that he can go with full strength again next week."
Goalkeeper Tim Wiese, meanwhile, could be available on Saturday. The 27-year-old has been labouring with a torn thigh muscle which forced him to miss the Bundesliga games in Cottbus and against Bayern as well as the UEFA Cup return leg in Milan and the German Cup match in Wolfsburg. "Tim took part in the complete team training today. If he finishes tomorrow's training pain-free then we can count on him for Saturday," said Schaaf confidently on Thursday.
