The knot has been broken. Werder Bremen were impressive midweek in a 5-2 victory against Wolfsburg, advancing to the semi-finals of the German DFB Cup and apparently finally getting back on the road to success. On Saturday 7 March 2009 at 3:30 p.m. the Green-Whites will play at Hoffenheim. In front of a sold-out crowd at Rhein-Neckar Arena, Diego, Pizarro and company hope to continue their rising trend from the past few days in Germany's top flight.
"We worked through the cup competitions pretty strongly. But now we have to continue the results in the Bundesliga as well," demanded head coach Thomas Schaaf. Werder are still waiting for their first victory in the Bundesliga in the 2009 calendar year. And Bremen hope it finally comes in Sinsheim. But Hoffenheim will not make things easy for Bremen in their hunt for three points.
Schaaf warned his team about the quality of their up-coming opponents: "A very strong team is awaiting us in Hoffenheim. They have played some excellent football this season, and it will not be an easy match for us." Ralf Rangnick's Hoffenheim team have yet to really find their form in the second half. The leaders at the winter break, Hoffenheim have won just once in their last five games to fall to third place on the table. Still that is hardly a bad standing for a team which was playing in the third division Regionalliga just two seasons ago. But the promoted club has yet to regain its "magical football" which tantalised the league in the first half.
Speaking of "magical football": The first half game between Werder and Hoffenheim in September 2008 was a spectacle for football fans as Bremen won 5-4. Both teams offered the spectators amazing offensive football for the ages. "If this weekend's game ends with a positive result for us, then I have no problem if it gets a little turbulent again," said Schaaf with a grin.
