Werder fans were overjoyed, laying in each other arms, jumping, celebrating and singing: "SVW, SVW, SVW is there again ...!" The well-practiced chant was heard plenty of times throughout the Volkswagen Arena. And that's because the Green-Whites scored plenty of times. All told, the ball landed in the net five times for Werder - almost as if the team was trying to wipe out its struggles over the past couple months in one showing.
"We showed much improvement today, found our way again to the goal and after all those draws we finally won again," concluded head coach Thomas Schaaf after the fine Cup evening. "That was in certain phases the true Werder. After advancing in the UEFA Cup, now we were rewarded for remaining patient recently by reaching the DFB Cup semis," added a joyous Bremen manager Klaus Allofs.
Even Torsten Frings was uncommonly enthusiastic: "Other than the final 20 minutes of the first half we played a really good game. Other than that phase, Wolfsburg didn't have a chance against us. And the margin of this victory was deserved."
