Werder Bremen played to a scoreless 0-0 draw at home against Bayern Munich on the 22nd game day. In front of 42,100 spectators at Weser Stadion, both teams offered an excellent and open game. Despite playing the final 74 minutes a man down, Bremen were able to control the run of play and bring home a draw against the defending champions.
The game started with a shock for the Green-Whites. Werder defender Naldo was shown the red card after just 16 minutes for fouling Bastian Schweinsteiger as the final defender. Just before that, Per Mertesacker had lost the ball to his German national team colleague. And Werder played from that point on with 10 men.
Despite being under-manned, Bremen controlled the game, which turned into an exciting and interesting game between two of Germany’s best teams in recent memory. Werder’s best chance in the first half came after 33 minutes as Claudio Pizarro sent his header off a Clemens Fritz pass just wide of goal from short distance. And the former Bremen midfielder Tim Borowski struck only the side netting in the 37th minute and could not beat Werder keeper Christian Vander five minutes later, leaving the game even at 0-0 at half-time.
The game remained open after the re-start with both teams creating good chances. The top two followed one another. In the 73rd minute, Borowski deflected Mesut Özil’s free kick to Pizarro, who struck just wide left from 10 yards out. And Bayern were close to grabbing the lead two minutes later. Franck Ribery sent Zé Roberto but the Brazilian was stopped by the excellent Vander between the Bremen posts. And the game ended 0-0 - a result with which the Green-Whites could be satisfied after the early red card for Naldo.
