Neither Werder Bremen nor Bayern Munich are where they want to be in the Bundesliga standings. Both teams grabbed impressive successes during the week in international play and now the two long-time rivals face off on Sunday, 1 March 2009 at Weser Stadion. WERDER.DE took time on Friday to talk to Jürgen Klinsmann ahead of the important showdown.
werder.de: Mr. Klinsmann, did you think that Werder would advance against AC Milan?
Klinsmann: Werder deserved to advance and we are happy for Werder, about how they play, but also about them moving on. It was an excellent performance and I'm happy for the team and Thomas Schaaf.
You and your team on Wednesday bagged a convincing 5-0 victory at Sporting Lissabon in the Champions League. What are you expecting from the game on Sunday in Bremen?
Klinsmann: It's a meeting of two tradition-rich clubs. These games have always been exciting in the past. And I expect that again on Sunday. Both teams will come into the game with confidence after the most-recent successes. I expect an open, exciting but also a difficult match. Both teams play offensive football. But we have some points to make up in the Bundesliga and will therefore be very motivated and hopefully very concentrated as well, and we will be going for the three points.
The first half game between these two teams was won by Werder 5-2 in the Allianz Arena. Have you put behind you completely the clear loss?
Klinsmann: Surely some of our players will have this game in the back of their minds, especially the final result. But we only had ourselves to blame for that because we played too far from our opponents and were not present. This time it will be a completely different game and we want to play better than the first game.
