Tim Wiese was not aboard the flight to Milan this morning. The German international keeper is still labouring with a slight muscle tear in his right thigh. And he will miss the UEFA Cup Round of 32 return leg after missing the away Bundesliga match last Saturday in Cottbus. "Of course I am really disappointed that I cannot help the team in such an important game," said the 27-year-old.
His replacement Christian Vander meanwhile is very excited about the up-coming game. "I am always happy when I can play. The game against Milan will be my first UEFA Cup match so it will be something special," said Vander after the final training session of the Green-Whites on German soil Tuesday afternoon. "For Christian it's nothing new. He knows the situation from other games and has shown that he is a good keeper," said head coach Thomas Schaaf.
The fact that the game is against mighty AC Milan in Stadio Guiseppe Meazza is not a big deal for Vander. "I have also played against Real Madrid and had a good experience. I hope that I can say the same thing about Milan on Thursday," said the 28-year-old, who thinks the Green-Whites' chances of advancing are very good. "We showed last week that we can hold our own against Milan. I think we have enough quality to advance."
The following Werder players will try to bring the club into the Round of 16 on Thursday: Vander, Pellatz – Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Baumann, Fritz, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Prödl, Tziolis, Jensen, Frings, Almeida, Pizarro, Mertesacker, Harnik
