Spectators in Weser Stadion held their collective breath last Wednesday when Clarence Seedorf sent a diagonal volley through pass to Filippo Inzaghi and the striker blasted his shot against the crossbar of Bremen's goal. Yesterday, more than 56,000 fans at Guiseppe Meazza Stadium had the Dutch playmaker Seedorf to thank as AC Milan beat Cagliari Calcio 1-0 with little glamour but with their usual effectiveness.
The Rossoneri, who saw Pato and Ronaldinho added to their list of injured, had to wait quite long for the win. The game was decided in the 65th minute after a long ball into the Cagliari area. With a streaking Inzaghi lurking behind him, Cagliari defender Diego Lopez tried to head back to his keeper Federico Marchetti but the ball bounced off the charging Marchetti. It landed at the feet of Clarence Seedorft, who slotted home easily from 14 yards.
The match winner Seedorf looked to the future. "On Thursday, we will host Werder Bremen and I anticipate a Champions League-like atmosphere in San Siro. We hope that our important players will be fit by them to give our coach more choices to make his decision. Still, we did get the job done last Wednesday despite missing some players. But I am convinced and optimistic," said Seedorf. But keeper Christian Abbiati, who was replaced in the first leg by Dida, warned his team about Werder: "They are a dangerous team with crosses and headers. We have to really watch out."
