Nine points from the final UEFA Cup spot, nine points from the relegation and 11th place - Werder Bremen just cannot seem to improve their positive in the Bundesliga standings. The Green-Whites remain winless after their fourth game of the second half. And that was reason enough for the main pillars of the team to start looking down the table Saturday afternoon.
Captain Frank Baumann said things don't need to be made too dramatic but blandishing them was not correct either. "I am worried. Everyone has to have realised the situation we are in. We still haven't found our game in the second half. And we aren't getting enough points. Usually relegation would not be an issue for us. But you can never totally rule anything out in football. It is more important than ever for us to continue to work and gather some points."
Per Mertesacker added: "We are kind of in a negative spiral. We need too many opportunities. And you cannot win like that in the Bundesliga. We need to stop this as quick as possible. It looks bitter right now but I am still confident that we will get out of this hole."
Manager Klaus Allofs also spoke about looking to the lower ranks of the league. "We are not afraid of looking at the chasers and we will not close our eyes to them. We continually see that we are better than the results but it's just not enough. There are just too many things that are not working right now. We are making mistakes doing things we usually can do in our sleep. Saying we are getting tight is not enough of an explanation. We're bringing problems onto ourselves and that is endangering our success."
