The evaluations from Werder players after the Energie Cottbus game sounded similar to ones from past weeks. The problem was not a lack of creativity in the mixed zone. Instead it was because the game at Stadion der Freundschaft looked similar to action in the past weeks as well. Werder dominated but was not dangerous enough in front of the goal. The mistakes and problems in Cottbus were the same as those against AC Milan, Gladbach and Schalke.
"We shouldn't be stunned. We just need to blame ourselves. Once again we gave the opponents too many chances. We gave so much effort and were the better team. But we didn't do enough with our chances. After going ahead 1-0, we stopped being active and then allowed the equaliser. We started running again and had chances. But once again we didn't watch out in the back. Again we lose a game which we cannot lose," said head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Manager Klaus Allofs said: "That was categorically too little today. We had problems pushing forward and were too native in the back. We played attractive football up until the area but we just cannot score goals. And then again we could not keep control of the game after leading 1-0. But even after the equaliser, we were closer to pulling ahead than Cottbus. But then we started giving false signals. We start playing back-heels. You can play like that in certain situations but not in these kinds of games. We have to stop these mistakes."
Allofs underlined that he holds the entire team responsible. "We cannot make the mistake of going after individual players after every game. Everyone is not playing up to their potential." Hopefully for not much longer ...
