Werder Bremen lost on the 21st game day 2-1 at Energie Cottbus. In front of 14,780 spectators in Stadion der Freundschaft, Hugo Almeida gave Bremen the lead in the 46th minute. Ivica Iliev equalised in the 51st minute and Dimitar Rangelov gave Cottbus the winner in the 90th minute.

Werder were challenged straight away against defensive-minded Cottbus though they had the first good chance of the game. Playmaker Diego circled a free kick in the 18th minute but Energie keeper Gerhard Tremmel held the ball in the last second. Shortly thereafter Cottbus proved dangerous. Tim Wiese replacement Christian Vander saved Ivica Iliev’s shot in the 17th minute after a Ervin Skela pass.

Werder began to take control of the game but Cottbus had two more fine chances. Skela’s shot after 26 minutes went just left of the post and then Timo Rost sent a header just over the bar in the 34th minute. And that left the game scoreless at the break.

In the second half, the Green Whites started excellently. A minute after the re-start German international Clemens Fritz streaked down the left side and then crossed to Hugo Almeida, who used his chance and headed in for 1-0. But the joy was short-lived as Iliev won a ball from Fritz, pulled away and then equalised in the 51st minute.

Bremen played more offensively but were still missing their luck. A deflected Diego free kick after 57 minutes went just wide of goal and shortly thereafter Tremmel cleared a short distance shot from Almeida as well as a 30-yard blast by Naldo. And the end proved bitter for the guests. Rangelov scored the 2-1 decider in the 90th minute, handing a loss to Werder, who were unsuccessful in their final push to equalise.
