The airplane with the Werder players left Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. for the Bundesliga match in Cottbus. Not on board the plane were German international keeper Tim Wiese and Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro. "Tim still has problems with a thigh muscle. After the game on Wednesday he felt something again and another check-up showed a slight muscle tear," said head coach Thomas Schaaf after the final practice. "It is purely a precautionary measure. Nothing worse is expected," said the 27-year-old keeper.
Pizarro did not take part in Friday's training due to a delayed flight. And head coach Thomas Schaaf did not nominate the Peruvian for the squad. "Whoever misses the final practice will not be considered for the game," said Schaaf. Also not in the team is Jurica Vranjes. The Croatian did return to team training on Friday after an injury. But playing against Cottbus would be too early.
Awaiting the Werder players in the Lausitz region will be a winter wonderland.
Heavy snows covered the area around the stadium as well as the uncovered standing fan sections. Energie Cottbus started a "snow helper movement" to clear the stands. "The game is in no way endangered. And the field is expected to be in good condition with its grass heating system," assured Ronny Gersch, Energie Cottbus spokesman.
The following 18 players are listed for the squad Saturday against Energie Cottbus: Vander, Pellatz – Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Baumann, Fritz, Rosenberg, Diego, Özil, Prödl, Tziolis, Jensen, Frings, Almeida, Niemeyer, Mertesacker, Harnik
