Juventus, Inter and AC Milan - Werder's undefeated streak against Italian teams at Weser Stadion remained in tact. Still, the 1-1 draw was not the much sought-after liberating result despite plenty of effort.
"In the end, you have to be satisfied because Inzaghi could have made it 2-0 with his second goal. But all told we have to regret not using our many chances. And then we give up another dumb goal. We keep hurting ourselves with these kinds of dumb mistakes. Basically it was just the continuation of the Gladbach game," said a disappointed Klaus Allofs.
It was clear to see that the goal ruined the manager's evening. "We didn't really even have the chance to calmly put together our game. We were once again under total pressure to take high risks in every scene. We made AC Milan more secure over the course of the first half and ourselves less secure. At this level, a very good game is not enough. We want to advance, but to do that we will have to improve," added Allofs.
Most of the Werder players agreed with this estimation as there was very little satisfaction despite the draw. Per Mertesacker said: "We wanted to play at a really high tempo. And that worked for us in the first 15 minutes. Unfortunately we allowed the goal. And it was clear that we could not keep up that tempo for 90 minutes. But in the decisive moments when we apply pressure we also have to score. But we kind of are missing the final punch."
And Mertesacker was aggravated that Milan were able to grab the lead despite having been more or less invisible to that point including the goal scorer Inzaghi. "I'm sure plenty of defenders have had this experience with him. He barely is seen but in the decisive moments the ball just wants to go to him. With the goal, he at first couldn't bring the ball under control. And then it falls again right at his feet. It just goes like that sometimes."
