Wednesday evening was all about international friendlies with 54 national teams testing their current form in the build-up to qualifications for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. All told there were 10 Werder players travelling with seven different national teams.
Striker Markus Rosenberg and Sweden had the upper hand with a 2-0 victory over Werder team-mate Sebastian Prödl's Austria in front of 11,800 fans in Graz. Both Werder players played the entire game.
There was also a winner in the game between Portugal and Finland. Hugo Almeida's Portuguese knocked off Petri Pasanen's Finland 1-0 with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a penalty in the 79th minute. Almeida was in the starting line-up next to the FIFA Footballer of the Year and played until the 56th minute. Pasanen was substituted out in the 79th minute.
Neither Alexandros Tziolis nor Daniel Jensen can claim a victory as Tziolis's Greeks and Jensen's Danes played to a 1-1 draw in Piraeus. Jensen performed well but was taken out at half-time while Tziolis played the entire game.
