The German national team started the 2009 calendar year with a loss. The Germans lost 1-0 against Norway in Düsseldorf. The game included the senior national team debut of Werder player Mesut Özil. The 20-year-old was substituted in for Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski in the 78th minute of the match. Two other Green-White players appeared for Germany, Torsten Frings and Per Mertesacker, the latter of which was taken out of the game at half-time.
Even though German clearly controlled the game, it was the very defensive ordered Norwegians who scored the only goal of the night. Morten Pedersen's flat cross was struck home by Christian Grindheim in the 63rd minute.
