Werder Bremen lost 1-0 against FC Schalke 04 on the 19th game day of the season. In front of 61,673 spectators in the Arena AufSchalke, Benedikt Höwedes scored the only goal of the game in the 48th minute.
It was clear from the first minute on that both teams were very cautious coming. Neither side wanted to make a mistake or allow a goal chance through a lack on concentration. Therefore the game did not have any top chances in the first half hour. Mesut Özil passed to Markus Rosenberg in the area but the Swede was unable to beat Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer.
Schalke gained more run of play shortly after that. Sebastian Boenisch cleared a dangerous cross by Jefferson Farfan in front of Gerald Asamoah in the 32nd minute. And then Tim Wiese was forced to make an excellent save against Ivan Rakitic in the 33rd minute after some dribbling and blast from 14 yards. And the teams went to the locker rooms even at 0-0.
Bremen fell behind shortly after the break. Farfan’s cross from the right side went to Höwedes, who had room in the middle to head home the 1-0 goal for the hosts (48'). The game went back and forth after that with both sides close to scoring. Rosenberg could not hit home in the 54th and Naldo was stopped in the 69th. And Werder had to accept a 1-0 loss.
