Mesut Özil has made a decision. The Werder professional would like to continue playing for Germany beyond his U21 international career. The 20-year-old midfielder gladly accepted the nomination by German national team coach Joachim Löw. The coach nominated Özil as well as his Bremen team-mates Per Mertesacker, Tim Wiese and Torsten Frings for the international match against Norway on 11 February 2009 in Düsseldorf. It is the first nomination to Germany's top national team for Özil. The Werder player, who had also been asked recently to play for Turkey, had to decide this year for which federation he would play in the future.
Of the nomination by Joachim Löw, Mesut Özil said:"I am really happy about the invitation. I want my chance in the German national team. It was not easy for me to make the decision in the last couple weeks because my family and many friends are from Turkey. This is not a decision against my Turkish roots. But my family has lived in Germany for three generations now and I grew up here, always felt welcome, and got my chance here with the junior national teams. I know that it was the right choice. I hope that I can continue my successful way this summer with the U21 national team at the European Championship. But my main goal remains to concentrate on my duties with Werder," said Özil.
