SV Werder Bremen celebrated its 110th birthday yesterday. A group of schoolchildren founded on 4 February 1899 the club "Fussballverein Werder von 1899" ("Football club Werder from 1899"). The club's name was taken from the peninsula Stadtwerder along the Weser River where the first training and match grounds for the club were located. The word Werder means a river island or the land surrounded by a river such as the Peterswerder, on which Bremen's Weserstadion is today located.
Besides football, the club today also offers handball, athletics, table tennis, gymnastics and chess. "We are proud of the history of our club, which is rich in highlights. Especially through the successes in football, we have made an excellent name internationally. But we are also happy that sports other than football can develop very well as well. With more than 34,000 members, you can see the significance of our club," said Klaus-Dieter Fischer, president of SV "Werder" von 1899 e.V.
