"Hunters sometimes go out full of hope and come back deeply disappointed. That was the case with us today. And if you look in the locker room you can see how aggravated we are that we could not get at least a draw," said manager Klaus Allofs, describing the team's mood after visiting the Weser Stadion changing room. Deep in the catacombs below the East Curve were Torsten Frings, Hugo Almeida and company trying to find the right words.

Tenth place, 12 points from the lead and 13 points from the first relegation spot. Right in the middle but yet nowhere. That really gets in your head. "That was a very bitter setback with our lofty goals. We are realistic enough to know that after a home loss against Bielefeld we don't need to talk about the championship or the Champions League. Our next goal is now a victory at Schalke," said the Werder manager, who also made it clear that Werder would not be prematurely giving up on the season.

"I talked of a setback. But we cannot stop having high expectations for ourselves. You could see what kind of potential this team has on Wednesday in Dortmund. We will be travelling to Schalke with any left desire to win or enthusiasm." Allofs is convinced that Werder can kick-start their second half engine with three points in the Veltins Arena. "It is too early to say the hunt is over and throw in the towel. We will not allow ourselves into a situation where we can't move up the standings."

And the players also know that they need to start thinking small. Clemens Fritz said: "We don't need to look at the international spots in the table. We have to think week to week and work level-headed on the pitch. Schalke is just the next step." And Torsten Frings agreed: "We don't need to talk about third place or about what is still possible. We just have to make sure we win our games and make good a few points."
