Werder Bremen started the second half with a bitter 2-1 loss against Arminia Bielefeld in front of 38,522 spectators in Weser Stadion. The guests took the lead in the 24th minute through Thorben Marx but Hugo Almeida was able to equalise in the 44th minute. Artur Wichniarek struck in the 49th minute for the 2-1 final score-line.

The Green-Whites, who had eight players unable due to injuries or suspensions, started with more run of play against the defensive-minded Bielefeld but could not find any holes in the guests’ back line. Bielefeld were able to counter-attack and grabbed the lead in the 24th minute through Marx. Werder regained control of the game but could not equalise the game until one minute before the break. Almeida unleashed a hammer free kick from 20 yards out for the 1-1 half-time score.

Thomas Schaaf’s team gave up the lead again just four minutes after the re-start. Wichniarek had too much room after a through ball and one-timed the ball past a charging Tim Wiese to make it 2-1 for Bielefeld. Werder pushed forward with everything they had looking for another equaliser but could not take advantage of their chances and had to settle for a 2-1 loss and an unwelcome start to the second half. The Green-Whites remained middle of the table with Bielefeld 14th in the standings.
