It was a huge effort and a moral and masterful achievement. But the Werder players do not have a lot of time to get excited about advancing to the German Cup quarter-finals. The Green-Whites start the second half of the Bundesliga already on this coming Sunday, 1 February 2009 with a home match against Arminia Bielefeld. "Dortmund was a good game for us. But that was not everything. We have to bring that concentration and consequence with into the next few games," head coach Thomas Schaaf told his players after the victory.
But the coach will be forced to make some personnel changes. Two of Bremen's top offensive forces, playmaker Diego and striker Claudio Pizarro, will definitely miss the game due to suspensions. Also out of the game on Sunday will be interior defenders Naldo and Sebastian Prödl. Neither is far enough along yet. Naldo is getting accustomed to the workload now in rehab and Sebastian will need even longer before returning to team training.
Also question marks for the game are captain Frank Baumann and striker Markus Rosenberg. Both players missed the Dortmund game due to illness. "The current status is that neither of them has gotten worse. But they also haven't gotten better," said Schaaf. "It is also unlikely that Petri Pasanen will be available for the Bielefeld game. He got injured in the final minute of the Dortmund game and his foot swelled up."
One of player has a different situation though. "Daniel Jensen could possibly be an option for the roster on Sunday. But we have to wait and see the next couple of days. Just like with Martin Harnik," said Schaaf.
