Werder Bremen won their German Cup Round of 16 showdown with Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and advanced to the quarter-finals. In front of 73,000 spectators in Dortmund, Swiss striker Alexander Frei (10’) gave the hosts the lead in the early going. But Hugo Almeida (62’) and Claudio Pizarro (80’) turned the game around after half-time for a victory for the Green-Whites.

In an exciting first half, the first goal fell early on - unfortunately for the wrong side though. Referee Manuel Gräfe allowed play to continue after a Florian Kringe tackle on Almeida and the ball landed to Mohamed Zidan, who in the 10th minute passed further onto his right to Frei who slotted the ball home between the legs of Werder keeper Tim Wiese for the 1-0 Dortmund lead.

Werder controlled the run of play after that though Dortmund had the better chances. There was a questionable scene in the 25th minute after Diego collected a poor shot by Almeida and was felled in the area by Felipe Santana - but there was no penalty given. On the other side, the Green-Whites were lucky that the former Bremen player Zidan struck only the left post in the 32nd minute.

After the break, Almeida had the first top chance in the 48th but was stopped from 18 meters by Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller. The Portuguese striker was able to celebrate shortly thereafter after coolly collecting Clemens Fritz’s pass from the right side and sinking his shot into the left corner in the 62nd minute.

Just when many thought there would be extra time, it was time for Pizarro to strike. Playmaker Diego circled his fine free kick from 18 meters off the left post. Mesut Özil was quickest to the rebound, but instead of shooting he pushed the ball onto Pizarro, who hammered home the 2-1 winner in the 80th minute.
