The final training for the Werder professionals had just ended at the construction site in Weser Stadion when the team left extra-punctually at 2:58 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for Dortmund for their DFB Cup Round of 16 match. "I am happy that it's finally starting back up. Now there is no more speculation - just results," said manager Klaus Allofs about the start of the 2009 calendar schedule.
The first competitive match of 2009 for the Green-Whites comes after three weeks of intensive training work. And the re-start of the season is straight away a knock-out game. On Wednesday, 28 January 2009 at 7 p.m., Werder take on hosts Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup. And head coach Thomas Schaaf knows all about the strength of Dortmund, who did not lose a match in the first half of the Bundesliga in their home Signal-Iduna-Park. "If BVB get rolling and the team finds its rhythm then they can do some good things. It is a great atmosphere in Dortmund and the fans really push their players. And it will depend on us how we perceive this arena," said the coach.
Thomas Schaaf will have to do without Sebastian Prödl, Naldo, Martin Harnik, Aaron Hunt, Christian Vander and Daniel Jensen in the re-match of last year's Round of 16. "Naldo's movements are getting somewhat better. And the training drills which he is doing have gone pain-free. But he will not yet be available tomorrow," admitted Thomas Schaaf, who nominated the following 18 players:
Wiese, Pellatz – Fritz, Mertesacker, Pasanen, Boenisch, Tosic, Andersen – Baumann, Tziolis, Frings, Vranjes, Özil, Diego, Niemeyer – Pizarro, Rosenberg, Almeida
