Sebastian Prödl slowly has his sights set on returning to Werder team training. The Austrian international tore an exterior ligament in his right ankle in the 13 December 2008 game against VfL Wolfsburg and has been fighting since then to make his return to practice. He has put in extra rehab sessions over the past six weeks to help reach his goal. And the Austrian even refrained from his favourite hobby of alpine skiing during the winter vacation.
And now the defender's hard work is finally paying off. "It's getting better day by day," said the 21-year-old after the Green-Whites training Monday afternoon. "There is still some light swelling in my foot. But that will not stop me from increasing my training every day. Today I was able to run some speed drills and even worked a little bit with the ball," said a beaming Prödl, who added: "It's important now to have some contact with the team again in training."
Prödl may not be available for Werder's start of the second half on Wednesday in the German Cup Round of 16. But he soon will be a welcome addition to the Green-Whites squad. "The doctor and physiotherapists told me that I can return to team training on Wednesday or Thursday. I am really looking forward to it. Then I can finally have fun playing football again."
