"Citibank meets Werder" was the slogan of the event. The complete Werder team travelled by German Railways (DB) train to Citicorp Services Ltd. at Harry-Epstein-Platz in Duisburg on Wednesday afternoon. Some 190 Citibank employees, including board members Peter Blatter and Ulrich Jordan as well as Citibank Deutschland CEO Franz Josef Nick, warmly greeted the 27 Werder players, the coaching staff and managers Manfred Müller and Klaus Allofs.
After a small discussion, the players mingled among the spectators for about an hour, signing autographs, having their pictures taken and even playing some table soccer. "You could see that everyone had a lot of fun," said Per Mertesacker, who took every occasion to have small chats with Citibank employees.
"This kind of action is important for the team. Citibank is not only a logo on our jersey. But you can see here that people work for this partner and you can see how much work stands behind us. We are not just financially supported, but we also have a lot of fans among the workers," said Thomas Schaaf about the colourful goings-on in the Duisburg office building.
