It works after all! Werder Bremen finally collected their first victory of 2009 in their fourth test match of the winter. After losing the last game rather unluckily, the Green-Whites earned a deserved 3-2 (2-1) victory over Lech Posen, the leaders in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Winter acquisition Alexandros Tziolis brought the Green-Whites ahead 2-0 with goals in the 24th and 27th minutes.
Lech Posen, however, pulled one back shortly before the break through Semir Stilic (43'). And Stilic evened the score 2-2 at the hour mark. But Claudio Pizarro gave Werder the 3-2 victory with his goal in the 74th minute.
The Green-Whites' starting line-up saw six changes as opposed to the last game against Besiktas Istanbul. For his team's final test match before the competitive matches start back up on 28 January 2009 against Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup, Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf brought regular keeper Tim Wiese back between the posts and the wingbacks were Sebastian Boenisch and Dusko Tosic replacing Clemens Fritz and Petri Pasanen on the right and left sides respectively. Also captain Frank Baumann came in for Niklas Andersen in the interior defence.
Baumann's usual spot in the defensive midfield was filled by Torsten Frings with new man Tziolis taking over the role as an offensive midfielder. And in the attack, Pizarro and Boubacar Sanogo got the start over Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida.
