The Werder professionals finally collected their much-awaited first victory of 2009 in their fourth test match with Alexandros Tziolis striking two goals in a decisive role. "The coach told me before the game that I should look to shoot more often. And I had those words in mind in both goal scenes and it worked," the Greek explained his simple recipe for success. "Football can be very easy. Unfortunately it's not like that always."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf gladly recognised his new acquisition's two goals. "That is exactly why he interested us so much. His push towards the goal makes him a very special player. But he has to take advantage of that more often so that he can profit from it," said Schaaf. "I told that to him once again just before the game.
Manager Klaus Allofs was also full of praise for the Greek international after the game. "Of course it's important that he scored two goals today. He showed that he can develop the pressure in front of the goal which we expect from him," said Allofs, who knows that Tziolis still needs time to further develop.
But the two goals by the 23-year-old Tziolis were not the focal point in the end. Instead it was the victory for the team. And it was easy to sense the relief among the players after the win. "This victory is very important. We needed some success for our self-confidence," said winning goal scorer Claudio Pizarro. And German international Torsten Frings said after the final whistle: "Victories cannot be replaced by anything."
