Yesterday morning, the Werder professionals practiced in Bremen for the first time since their training camp in Belek, Turkey. In temperatures hovering just barely over the freezing mark, head coach Thomas Schaaf had his team practice once more before the players got a well-deserved Sunday off.
Back with the team as planned was Claudio Pizarro, who during the week left the training camp to answer accusations from the Peruvian federation in front of the international sports court CAS in Mexico City that Pizarro took part in excessive partying with alcohol and women. Training for the first time on German soil was Werder's winter acquisition Alexandros Tziolis. The Croatian Jurica Vranjes meanwhile said after training about the team's return: "It is very nice to be back. But I liked the weather better in Turkey. It's too cold here."
One player not yet with the team but working very hard to get back into the mix is Martin Harnik. The Austrian international is working individually with assistant coach Wolfgang Rolff. "Today was the endurance test. I hope I passed," grinned the 21-year-old. "I am again without pain and if I had my choice I would get back into team training on Monday. But the coaches will decide that."
