Closing report from Calista Luxury Resort in Belek:
Nothing new from Belek! Once again the team has lost against a Turkish team, as often as the recent years combined. And once again a trio of referees would serve more as an opponent. But this time Werder passed the test without any injuries. There were questionable decisions to overcome in both halves. Unfortunately, one of the local organisers admitted to me that the Turkish federation only allows referees from the region to call games - and none of them are top class. And you can tell.
But we should have won the game against the top-class Besiktas. There were enough chances. But now we have three defeats in our luggage back to Bremen. But there aren’t any harsh feelings. The aura within the team is growing. And the hard work seems to have paid off as improvements can be seen. The media really covered Torsten Frings’ red card and the lost matches with things getting pretty hectic. And that made Klaus Allofs mad. His opinion was that the work was very disciplined and goal-orientated, which leaves him confident about a good second half.
Luckily we were spared from any major injuries. Naldo had to sit out the rest of training camp after trying to return from an injury in the calf/Achilles tendon area. His training focused on water drills and the stationary bike. But the coach hopes for Naldo’s return next week as well as that of Said Husejinovic (he turned an ankle) and Timo Perthel (inter-vertebral disc problems). Of those injured who stayed in Bremen, Thomas Schaaf said that Martin Harnik has made the biggest improvements and already is practicing with a ball. Daniel Jensen and Aaron Hunt unfortunately are both not as far. But things seem to be moving in the right direction ...
