Thomas Schaaf had rarely seen such an unnecessary loss and was therefore upset about it. "We really should be mad at ourselves, because today we played our best game. There was more to be had. We wanted to play more active football, connect better on our passing and play more confidently. And we saw many of those elements. But on the other hand, it was not enough to bring home the victory. We didn't finish off the game. We did not have enough energy in the end. But we should have held on for at least a 1-1 draw."
Schaaf named two reasons for the last minute loss. "This loss is aggravating especially because of the opportunities we had. We had a number of chances but could not use them to build a larger advantage to take into the final stages."
But the offence was not the only problem as lapses in the concentration on defence resurfaced once again - like in Besiktas's first goal. "We should have stopped the opponent on the outside. But we were not active enough, were a bit too dutiful and just kind of ran with them. And then the attacker is allowed to shoot. That is exactly what we had talked about in the last few days," criticised the Bremen boss, who did offer some positives about the game.
One good point was the team's discipline as Schaaf said: "A big compliment. The fact that everyone remained reserved even though there were some very questionable decisions was a very big achievement." Even Per Mertesacker could not avoid a minor pot shot at the refereeing trio: "We can build upon this game because we remained calm despite some very questionable decisions."
