Werder once again had to accept a loss in their second test match as part of their training camp in Belek, Turkey. The Green-Whites lost 4-1 against Galatasaray Istanbul and showed right away afterwards that they are not at all satisfied with the 90 minutes of football and the result. "We did have some good stages where we passed the ball very well and created the odd goal opportunity. But we have to take from this that it was altogether too little," concluded head coach Thomas Schaaf.
And the players could not contradict the coach's clear words. Claudio Pizarro said: "We may be in the middle of the preparations and it may be normal that players are tired and we lose a game. But it is not normal that we give up so many goals."
Winter acquisition Alexandros Tziolis, who was allowed to pull on the Green-White jersey for the first time, was upset with the loss. "I am very satisfied with my own performance. But of course you want a different result in your debut. We lost today and had a bit of misfortune. But we also did not play very well. That has to get better in the next games. But most important is not the results in the test games but that we are in top condition on 28 January 2009 for the cup game," said the 23-year-old Greek international.
The biggest thorn in the head coach's side was not the loss but the sending-off of Torsten Frings. "When we come here we know what is expected of us. And we have to be able to deal with that. And we talked about that beforehand."
