Markus Rosenberg is not entirely not-guilty that Werder Bremen meet once again with coach Michael Skibbe on Tuesday. The Swedish striker in Bremen dress helped his club to the direct Champions League spot on the last Bundesliga game day in 2007-08 last May, leaving Bayer Leverkusen without a European cup match this season which eventually cost Skibbe his job in Leverkusen.
But just a few days after his sacking, the former German national team coach received the call from the Bosporus and signed a one-year contract with a club option for an additional year at the freshly-crowned Turkish league champions Galatasaray Istanbul - Werder's opponent in the Third Place game of the Radyospor Cup (today, 4:30 p.m.).
In their illustrious history, Istanbul have collected 17 national titles, 14 domestic cups as well as the 2000 UEFA Cup championship (4-1 after penalties against Arsenal) and the ensuing European Super Cup (2-1 against Real Madrid). All told, there are more than 3,000 trophies in Galatasaray's over-filled club museum. The roster is filled with veteran Turkish internationals such as Ümit Karan, Hasan Sas and Emre Asik as well as international talents like Milan Baros, Lincoln, Fernando Meira and Shabani Nonda. No doubt, Galatasaray will be a serious challenger for Werder.
Baros was certainly oozing self-confidence ahead of the match: "We have a very good team that is strong enough to become champions. And of course we want to raise the UEFA Cup to the heavens. Why shouldn't we win the cup?" Just out of the blue, there is one certain Green-White club which would gladly stop them doing so ...
